Kenichi Natsume was a professor of science and technology studies at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Japan, researching the history of science, technology, and engineering ethics. Kenichi was a committee member on engineering ethics at the Japanese Society for Engineering Education and the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies. He was also a valuable member of the SEFI Ethics SIG, where he contributed to the international policy project that explored ethics in accreditation requirements and to “The Routledge International Handbook of Engineering Ethics Education”.

Kenichi Natsume, who passed away in September 2024, was a leading voice in engineering ethics in Japan. He was meticulous in shedding light on how historic societal and ideological structures, global political influence, and policies shape our ethics. With his background grounded in engineering, history, and philosophy, he had a breadth of knowledge that was unique and expanded our current discussions on engineering ethics. His 2021 book “Japan’s Engineering Ethics and Western Culture” provides a lasting legacy of his work.

To colleagues who worked and collaborated with him, Kenichi was remarkably generous with his time, demonstrating a deep commitment, passion, and care for his students as well as the ethical impact of engineering in the broader society. Our discussions were always enriching and inspiring, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to engage with him.

The SEFI Ethics SIG community is joining peers worldwide in honouring Professor Kenichi Natsume and extending the deepest sympathy to Misaki Natsume and their young son for their loss.
