4 June 2025, 15:00 – 16:00 CEST / 9:00 – 10:00 EDT
Join us for an insightful SEFI@work featuring James Huff (Associate Professor of Engineering Education; Engineering Education Transformations Institute, University of Georgia) and Monique Ross (Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Computing Education, Engineering Education; The Ohio State University) who will share their research on the role of identity in engineering education, as detailed in chapter 9 “Advancing an Integrative Perspective of Identity in Engineering Education” from the International Handbook of Engineering Education Research.
This webinar provides a unique opportunity to understand the relevance of identity in engineering education. The authors present three broad perspectives to describe identity conceptualizations: identity as a personal, social, or sociocultural phenomenon. They will demonstrate how these perspectives manifest in the engineering education literature and discuss their recommendations on how engineering research might evolve into a transformative force for developing the well-being of engineering individuals, promoting justice, and advancing equity within engineering cultures.
This interactive session will be of interest to those that want:
- To learn more about identity theories and different ways to approach the identity phenomenon.
- To understand the benefits and boundaries of different ways of framing identity in study design and interpretations of results
- To challenge the presumption that engineering identity is a decisively positive achievement
- To explore how engineering education research can advance a transformative, equitable, and caring system of engineering education.
Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with leading experts. There will be the opportunity to ask questions.
We look forward to your participation!

General information on the SEFI@work series around the International Handbook of Engineering Education Research:
In 2024 and 2025, the SEFI Special Interest Groups are joining efforts around the International Handbook of Engineering Education Research. Each session will focus on one chapter, giving the floor to authors of the chapter. With this series we want to support the growth and maturing of the engineering education field and community in Europe and beyond. The goal of the series is to (1) increase the knowledge around engineering education research, (2) to strengthen the engineering education community feeling, and (3) to give a platform to the authors of the handbook’s chapters to disseminate their work.
This SEFI@work is brought to you by the SEFI Attractiveness Special Interest Group. The SIG webinars are organised by Sofie Craps (KU Leuven), Anja Kranjc Horvat (EPFL), Susie Ye (Bentley Systems), and Elisabeth Hülse (Ansys). Get in touch if you like to join the SIG.
