3-4 March 2025 – Gliwice and Krakow, PL. SEFI co-organised two events around engineering education bringing international perspectives and the latest trends in engineering education to:
9th EDUAL Conference at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice

This conference focused on dual programs brought together academia, industry, and policymakers to discuss the evolving landscape of engineering education, particularly in the context of digital learning, AI, and continuing professional development.
The conference opened with official speeches, including SEFI President Dr. Balázs Nagy (Budapest University of Technology and Economics), who emphasised SEFI’s commitment to fostering innovation in engineering education. His address highlighted the need for a stronger connection between academic curricula and industry demands, ensuring that engineers are equipped with both technical expertise and essential professional competencies.
Throughout the event, SEFI was well represented by several Board of Directors (BoD) members and Special Interest Group (SIG) chairs. Aida Guerra (Aalborg University) delivered a plenary presentation titled “Transforming Engineering Education for Sustainability: Where we are and where we want to go?”, exploring the role of sustainability in shaping the future of engineering education.
SEFI Vice President Emanuela Tilley (University College London) took part in a panel on Continuing Engineering Education, moderated by Darren Carthy (Engineers Ireland and SEFI BoD member), where she discussed strategies for lifelong learning and the role of universities in upskilling engineers throughout their careers.
SEFI’s involvement in EDUAL 2024 underscores its dedication to enhancing engineering education across Europe. We extend our appreciation to Rector Marek Pawelczyk, Wojciech Sitek, and the entire SUT team for their excellent organisation of this impactful event.
UNESCO World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development at the AGH University in Krakow
Celebrating World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, SEFI joined forces in organising a one-day international conference at AGH University in Krakow. The aim of this meeting was to showcase the crucial role of engineers in addressing global challenges and advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
SEFI’s presence was strong throughout the event, with several board members delivering insightful contributions:
- Balázs Nagy, SEFI President, delivered a speech on “Educating Modern Engineers – A European Perspective,”
- Greet Langie (KU Leuven, Belgium) presented on the “Strategic Shift: Professional Development for the Engineer of the Future,”
- Helena Kovacs (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland) discussed “Future Skills for Engineers,”
- Shannon Chance (Technological University Dublin, Ireland) contributed with a session on “Energizing Your Engineering Courses,”
- Annoesjka Cabo (Delft University of Technology, Netherlands) presented “Educating Future-Proof Engineers.”
Participants also had the opportunity to explore cutting-edge research and innovations through technical sessions and laboratory visits. Engaging presentations on sustainable agriculture, space sustainability, AI applications in engineering, and energy systems further enriched the discussions.
SEFI extends its gratitude to the main organiser Janusz Szpytko at AGH University of Krakow for hosting this inspiring event!
